Early in 2002, we reported the good news that money had been secured for our new community resource centre. Where are we now? Massive grants from the East Midlands Development Agency, the Governments UK Online Fund and Derbyshire County Council made possible the conversion of the School House on Ward Lane into our Community Resource Centre. This now forms part of an attractive complex with the Primary School and the Village Hall in a very accessible part of our village. January 2003 saw the completion of this Barlborough Parish Council project, and Rt. Hon Margaret Beckett the then Government Rural Affairs Minister officially opened the centre on 16th of that month.
Barlborough School House Trust exists as a company limited by guarantee and is a registered charity. The Trust bears responsibility for the Centre. The building is on a 50-year lease from Derbyshire County Council and is maintained by the Trust. The Centre, which has full disability access, contains a 12-position computer room, including specialist equipment and software. Two training rooms, an Internet access room and kitchen complete the facilities. The rooms are available to individuals, local industry or course providers. Since opening, the Centre has been able to offer a variety of local courses in IT skills, languages, hobbies and crafts.
