The Heritage Community School replaced Clowne Comprehensive School as a result of the re-organisation of Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire in the early 1990’s. It is an 11-16years Co-educational Community School, located in Clowne, a few minutes drive from junction 30 of the M1 motorway. The school’s vision is to provide a sustained high quality standard of education that recognises and celebrates individual talents and promotes aspiration towards goals that empower life-long success. The school’s intake comes mainly from five local primary partner schools located in the local former mining villages of Barlborough, Clowne, Creswell, Hodthorpe and Whitwell situated in the NE Derbyshire district of Bolsover.
It is currently pursuing specialist school status in Mathematics and Computing, and hopes to be designated next year. This will result in the school becoming a Centre of Excellence for local learners in these two aspects of learning. The 2003 Ofsted inspection described the school as rapidly improving at a rate faster than most schools nationally. This judgement follows improvements in student achievement at both key stage 3 and key stage 4; success in the extended curriculum and the introduction of a number of successful innovations. Local community support has been such that there has been a 4% increase in the school’s roll over a three-year period to an expected roll of in excess of 970 for September 2005. Heritage Community School has never been more popular as a first choice school for local parents and their children. In 2002 the school achieved the Schools’ Achievement Award and currently holds Sportsmark, Health Promoting Schools and Careermark status.
